Guitar, Voice
Critically praised for her rich soprano voice, “passion”, “beguiling”, “radiant singing” and “sensitive acting”, Italian-Canadian spinto soprano, Romina Di Gasbarro, is quickly emerging as one of the most exciting voices of her generation. Possessing a voice of uncommon beauty and “affective” musicality, she is a rare artist with much to say.
Romina Di Gasbarros operatic debut came in the role of Suor Genovieffa (Suor Angelica Puccini) in Viterbo, Italy. Soon afterwards, she moved to San Francisco, California to study with teacher and mentor, Olivia Stapp. There she gained major performance experience during that time with Festival Opera, Berkeley Opera, North Bay Opera, The Willows Theatre, The New Music Theatre Collective, The Chamber Arts House performance series and the American Opera Group in the U.S. as well as Opera Mississauga (The Royal Canadian Opera) in Canada. Additional full roles performed with orchestra are Desdemona (Otello-Verdi), Mimi (La Boheme-Puccini), Micaela (Carmen-Bizet), Sharon - 2nd Sop. (Master Class - Terence McNally) La Llorona (Rio de Mujeres - Hector Armienta). Awards include the Accademia Chigiana Award for Voice (granted by Victoria de los Angeles); First Place for Senior Grand Opera for Female Voice and Senior Grand Opera for Soprano, Kiwanis Competition; the Kiwanis Club of Humber Valley Immediate Past Present Award for Solo Voice; and the Dean Goodman Choice Award for Outstanding Achievement in Theatre for Supporting Performance in Master Class. Performances have been singled out with high praise by The Chicago Tribune, The Contra Costa Times, The Berkeley Daily Planet, San Francisco Classical Voice and The East Bay Press..
Ms. Di Gasbarro received her Bachelor of Music degree majoring in classical guitar and composition, and Artist Diploma in Voice Performance from The University of Western Ontario. Upon graduation, she moved to Milan, Italy to continue her vocal training and to immerse herself in the Italian operatic tradition. She won scholarships to attend the Arca Nuova Accademia di Canto Lirico in Turin, Italy with conductors, Aldo Ceccato and Romano Gandolfi; Onlus Euridice per la Musica e Melodramma in Viterbo, Italy with world renowned sopranos, Gabriella Tucci and Olivia Stapp; as well as the prestigious Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy with legendary soprano, Victoria de los Angeles. Romina was awarded the Accademia Chigiana Scholarship Award for Voice by Ms. De los Angeles. At the Chigiana academy she also attended classes with legendary tenor, Carlo Bergonzi and internationally celebrated composers Franco Donatoni and Luciano Berio.
Romina Di Gasbarros voice and compositions have been heard in concert, on the radio, on the campus of The University of Western Ontario and The University of Toronto, Earshot and Array Music.
