clarinet, saxophone, piano
Wisconsin-born clarinetist Angelina Lopez-Frank is an emerging musician and teacher in the Toronto area. Her love of music began when she started piano lessons at the age of seven, and exploded when she picked up the clarinet in middle school. At the age of fourteen she began taking private clarinet lessons with Dr. Andrea Splittberger-Rosen of the University of Wisconsin. Angelina was an avid performer in her secondary school years, and was principal clarinet of the Wisconsin State Honors Orchestra and Honors Band for several years. She also played the saxophone in her high school’s award winning jazz band.
Angelina completed her undergraduate degree in Music Performance at the University of Wisconsin where she graduated Magna cum Laude. She continued studying clarinet with Dr. Splittberger-Rosen, but expanded beyond the classical clarinet to study improvisation with David Hastings. She also took lessons from Donald Oehler of the University of North Carolina and Eric Mandat of Southern Illinois University. She was principal clarinet of the University Wind Ensemble and Orchestra, and was a member of the award winning woodwind quintet/quartet. She also played bass clarinet in the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra. As an in demand clarinet clinician, Angelina worked with high school marching bands throughout the state.
After completing her Bachelors degree, Angelina moved to Toronto to study with Joseph Orlowski of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She recently received her Masters of Music Performance degree from the University of Toronto where she was section leader of the University of Toronto Wind Ensemble, as well as a member of various chamber groups.
Angelina has been featured on Wisconsin Public Radio and has performed with musicians of various styles, including Bobby McFerrin, Evelyn Glennie, and James Campbell. She has participated in music festivals in the United States, Canada, and Switzerland, both as a chamber musician and a soloist. As a performer, Angelina’s specialty is classical music, but her artistry is enhanced with experience in traditional klezmer music and jazz. She is a member of the Sneak Peek Orchestra of Toronto and is associate principal clarinet in the Kindred Spirits Orchestra of Markham.
In addition to performing, Angelina is an Artist in Residence at the Etobicoke School of Arts (ESA). When not involved in music, she enjoys soccer, baking pies, and walking through and exploring the many neighbourhoods of Toronto.
