A solid foundation in music theory will help any performer improve their playing. These courses are designed to prepare students for Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) examinations.
Please note: For RCM Grades 5 through ARCT in any instrument or voice, students must also complete theory examinations before the practical examination certificate is issued.

Rudiments: Courses in rudiments are designed to introduce students to the basics of music. This includes:

3-in-1 (ALL levels of Rudiments in a FULL year course)
Our 3 in 1 Rudiments Theory course is a year long course, from September to May, in preparation for the May grade 2 RCM theory exam.
Harmony: Courses in harmony are designed to give students an understanding of the musical vocabulary of the 17th- and 18th-centuries. An emphasis is placed on structural and harmonic analysis, four-part harmony writing, and the construction of simple melodies and phrases.

Grade IV
Grade V (note that Grade V includes counterpoint)
Counterpoint: Students will be taught the basics of two-part contrapuntal writing, as well as the analysis of a fugal exposition.
Level offered:
Grade IV
Analysis: Students will apply the skills acquired in earlier theory courses in a broader, structural scope. The forms taught are: binary, rounded binary, ternary, rondo, theme and variations, sonata form, fugue, and various song types.
